7 Up-And-Coming Austin-Based Photographers

The city of Austin is well-known as an explosive center for the cultural arts.  It’s a home for many talented and progressive artists in every artistic and academic field. This list focuses particularly on some of Austin’s rising stars in the world of photography, with work ranging from the realistic to the more abstract.

Laura Morsman

The work of Laura Morsman walks the line between whimsical and realistic. Her photos focus on the imperfections of her subject matter while achieving an otherworldly appearance.

She regularly shoots weddings, editorials, seniors, product advertisements, and portraits. Her photographs are often a mixture of dark and bold tones with eye-catching patterns that stand out.

Katrina Barber

Katrina Barber pulls you into the canvas itself, with lifelike work featuring concerts, festivals, and many other events found in abundance throughout the city of Austin.

Some of Austin’s most popular events have been featured in Katrina’s work, including Austin City Limits Festival, Day For Night Festival, and Euphoria Music Festival. The energy and excitement of the crowds fuel Barber’s inspiration, and it certainly shines through in her photos.

Javi Gonzales

Javi Gonzales is an interesting figure, working as both a photographer and a community builder. His work is mostly recognizable for its minimalistic and simple composition. He works with a diverse source of national and international partners.

Javi is the founder of IGAustinTexas: a community Instagram feed dedicated to helping lesser-known artists meet up and collaborate. It’s an interesting experiment in a time of social media saturation.

David Brendan Hall

David Brendan Hall is another photographer whose inspiration draws from the dynamic social life of Austin. He’s most well-known for his photographs of Austin’s numerous concerts and music festivals. These sometimes incorporate crowd-participation, creating some very personal and unique images.

Hall is from Austin, but his work is international in terms of both location and themes. It has taken him to events the likes of Coachella, Bonnaroo, Governor’s Ball, and Corona Capital in Mexico. His photos have been featured in both local and international publications.

Mike Holp

The journey of Mike Holp began not unlike others on this list, but has since gone above and beyond. He began his career shooting crowds in concerts and music festivals, but later became interested in more abstract work, including aerial photography.

As technology advanced, drones began to play a prominent role in Holp’s work. Mike recently attended the Women’s March at the Texas State Capitol: part of the largest single day-protest in American history, capturing it via drone for some breathtaking aerial shots. His work is considered to be an intersection of technology and artistic vision.

Chelsea Fullerton Jones

Chelsea Fullerton Jones is the organizer behind Go Forth: a photo and design studio aimed to partner with small business owners. Austin is known for its entrepreneurial spirit and the countless small businesses that drive it, making Chelsea’s endeavor a picture-perfect fit.

Jones mixes photography with design and marketing strategy in order to help small businesses find their voice. Her work enables small business owners to compete with more large-scale advertising campaigns. She has also run Hands-On, which provides beautiful and affordable ready-for-market designs.

Ashleigh Amoroso

Ashleigh Amoroso is a food and fashion photographer, often combining the two themes in her work.

Her list of clients includes: Target, Urban Outfitters, Kitchen Fair, Travaasa, and Mashable. Her work makes use of the entirety of the frame to showcase her subject matter with lifelike vivid detail. Amoroso also hosts workshops for aspiring photographers, in which she talks about both the artistic and business-centric aspects of her career.
