Austin to Launch Comprehensive Movie Guide of Famous Regional Film Spots

Austin is a well-known pilgrimage sight for many film buffs; having hosted hundreds of films, television shows and advertising campaigns over the course of the past 50 years. Visiting film buffs are soon to be in luck: Austin’s tourism department has partnered with the Austin Film Commission to launch an official film tourism guide, providing interactive resources that highlight which regional locations have been featured on the silver screen.

From classics such as Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Dazed and Confused, Office Space and Friday Night Lights, the Austin Film Tourism Guide highlights the noteworthy filming locations that brought your favorite films and TV series to life. The guide currently features settings from 25 films and television series, with plans to continually update with additional locations and scene-by-scene breakdowns of shots filmed around Central Texas. The updates will be curated by director and commissioner for the Austin Film Commission, Brian Gannon. In a statement to KXAN News, Gannon spoke to the Austin’s storied legacy in the film industry, which shows no signs of slowing down any time soon.

“Currently, we’ve got HBO in production on a limited series here in town. We just had Fear the Walking Dead wrap up after four years here in Austin, and we currently have Walker hitting season two right now,” said Gannon. “It’s been really cool to see Austin on screen, and it’s also a really phenomenal way to see how, if you look back over the filmography, you can kind of see how the city has changed over the years.”

Louisiana and New Mexico have risen to prominence in recent years as serious competitors to Austin in the film industry. Even so, Gannon remains confident in Austin’s ability to deliver in ways no other location can.

“There is a local incentive that’s available to productions hiring Austinites,” Gannon says. “The city is also looking at permits and ways to make permitting easier for production, as a way to incentive productions to film here, at any budget level.”
