5 OF AUSTIN’S BEST BRUNCH SPOTS

As COVID restrictions ease and vaccines continue to roll out, many are chomping at the bit for an outing with friends and family. If brunch Austin TX is your thing, these five eateries are sure to start your morning on the sunny side.

South Congress Café

South Congress Café was established in 2003, inspired by a new wave of local artists and fresh, creative culture. The café seeks to reflect Austin’s diverse and lively vibes through its atmosphere and food. The building itself was once a drug store, constructed in the 1940s. The owners seek to merge new and old: preserving the historical brick structure of the building while updating with modern architectural design. In addition to stylish indoor seating, South Congress Café features an outdoor patio that is available for private bookings.

The café offers a special brunch menu every Saturday and Sunday, with items such as house-smoked salmon, mimosas, and sweet potato beignets tossed in brown butter and allspice sugar served with crème Fraiche and fresh berries.

South Congress Café is located at 1600 South Congress Avenue in Austin. The café is open Monday through Friday, 11 AM to 6 PM, and Saturday/Sunday 10 AM to 6 PM. Curbside Pickup and no-contact delivery options are available.

Mattie’s

Mattie’s is a part of Green Pastures events venue, located in a historic Austin farmhouse pre-dating the early 1900s. The restaurant is named for Martha “Mattie” Faulk, who moved into the house in 1916 with her husband, Henry. Throughout the Great Depression, the couple produced enough food on their small farm to feed many of their neighbors. Today, Mattie’s continues the tradition of providing locals and visitors alike with delicious, homemade comfort food.

The restaurant features a menu with classic Southern cuisine, as well as gourmet French dishes. Mattie’s has hosted governors, celebrities, visiting ambassadors and dignitaries. The restaurant has been open to customers of all races and religions since its opening in 1946–even though many Austin eateries did not desegregate until the passage of the Civil Rights Act 18 years later.

Mattie’s brunch menu includes mouthwatering dishes such as bananas foster beignets, smoked salmon, green chile pork chilaquiles and fried chicken eggs benedict. Vegan and vegetarian options are available as well, with offerings such as the basmati rice bowl: a dish loaded with chickpeas, coconut curry, roasted veggies, cilantro, tomato and green onions.

Mattie’s is located at 811 West Live Oak Street in Austin. Hours of operation are 5 PM to 8 PM Wednesday and Thursday, 5 PM to 9 PM Friday, and 11 AM to 2 PM Saturday and Sunday. Saturdays feature an additional dinner service as well, from 6 PM to 9 PM.
