Since March of 2020, the number of families experiencing food insecurity has doubled. Many are experiencing hunger for the first time. In the midst of the COVID-19 crisis, this problem has only worsened.

Feeding Texas

Feeding Texas is the largest hunger-relief organization in the Lone Star state, serving a total of 254 counties. They partner with 21 food banks to bring support to 4 million Texas citizens annually. In addition to providing food assistance, Feeding Texas works to find long-term solutions to food insecurity.

The organization contributes to disaster relief as well, mobilizing their network to work alongside federal, state and local officials to provide food, water, and other forms of relief. Feeding Texas provided over 43 million pounds of supplies to community members affected by Hurricane Harvey in 2017.

Central Texas Food Bank

The Central Texas Food Bank is the region’s largest hunger-relief charity, providing service to over 21 counties. CTFB is a registered 501 C3 organization that partners with over 300 financial supporters and volunteers, hailing from both private and government sectors.

Hope Food Pantry Austin

The Hope Food Pantry is an Austin area food bank and a Central Texas Food Bank partner, working to provide hunger relief to families in the Austin community. They serve citizens from all walks of life, including the homeless, the disabled, seniors, and the under/unemployed.

The pantry offers food staples such as rice, beans, canned fruit, and vegetables. An average of 13,000 pounds of food items are distributed by Hope Food Pantry each month to support Austin food pantry lists.

In the midst of the ongoing pandemic, Hope has begun offering curbside delivery. They are a Common Good Community Development member, funded by churches and individuals through a mix of grants and fundraisers. Click here to donate or learn more.

Keep Austin Fed

Founded in 2004, the program began when founder Randy Rosens started saving catered meals from fundraising events at Austin Museum of Art. The rescued food was donated to women and children at shelters around South Austin. Today, one of the best hunger charities, the organization feeds hundreds of Austin citizens every month, largely by means of rescued food.

By rescuing food that would otherwise be thrown away, Keep Austin Fed not only fights food insecurity, but cuts down on the production of methane gas that results from food being disposed of in landfills. ATX Free Fridge Project

This initiative provides fully-stocked community fridges, available to the public 24/7 throughout the city of Austin. Fridges supply everything from vegetables, breads, frozen foods, prepared meals, canned goods, and even baking supplies.

Hand sanitizer is also currently being provided at Free Fridge Project locations. Fridges are currently located outside Nixta Taqueria at 12th and Cedar and at Unit C Studio and Gallery on 2nd Street. Click here to follow the Project on Instagram for future updates.
